Tikal
Guatemala, central America
Tikal is one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization. Located in the Petén Basin of northern Guatemala, it forms part of the Tikal National Park in the department of El Petén. In 1979, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Once the thriving capital of a powerful Maya kingdom, Tikal reached its peak between the 6th and 9th centuries AD. The site's monumental architecture dates back as far as the 4th century BC, showcasing the grandeur of this once-great civilization.
Tikal is not only a marvel of history but also a haven for wildlife. Visitors can spot a variety of animals, including agoutis, coatis, gray foxes, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and an array of tropical birds like toucans, falcons, and ocellated turkeys. Jaguars, jaguarundis, and cougars are also said to roam the park, adding to the site's natural allure.
